One the landmarks of Annisquam Village is the Yacht Club, a photo is shown above. It is situated on the bank of the Annisquam river, a tidal estuary that marks the western side of the island where Rockport, and most of Gloucester, are located. The Club is a great place to have dinner on a pleasant summer evening. Members are seated on the rear porch which faces West. Looking across the Annisquam, you have a view of Wingaershiek Beach on the other side.

Up to the early 1900s, you could be ferried across the river for a small fee by a local man who owned a dory. Edwin Mellen, who built our house in 1895, took a photograph of the man. He noted his name on the back of the photo as "Jerry the ferrier". His name was Jerry Butler. The photo is above right.

To the right is a painting I did of the view to Wingaershiek from the Club porch. I decided to do this painting one night while we were having dinner and I noted how picturesque the scene was. Those are member boats, moored in the river. The white boat is a Nonsuch 30 and the dark wooden boat is a beautiful Molich 36 named Jezebel.
