Many schooners were lost in storms at sea. Some met a more ignominious end. The soft pastel painting above was taken from a Martha Hale Harvey photograph from the turn of the twentieth century. It shows an abandoned schooner on the railway at the corner of River Road and Leonard Street in Annisquam Village. The railway is still there. The beautiful, large building in the background, the old Tavern, also still stands, now painted a dark brown color.
Another turn-of-the-century photograph provided the theme for the oil painting (right). At the Head of the Harbor, that's the schooner, Polar Wave, at Sayward's wharf on Parker Street. All of the buildings and the wharf are now gone, but a marina is at this location. The painting is based on a photograph by Martha Hale Harvey who lived on River Road in Annisquam.
