My first dog portrait, that was not a sketch, was done with watercolor. It was of Copley, my sister-in-law, Nancy's, Golden Retriever (right). I could get the fur effects I wanted with the watercolor, but not the dark background that I needed to highlight Copley's beautiful red and gold coat. Then I tried oil pastels for the background, and it worked well.
For my next canine portraits, I turned to soft pastels to see how they would work. It turned out that they worked very well indeed. Above is Lola, a black lab mix. Her portrait was commissioned at the Annisquam Sea Fair where her owner won the silent auction to have the portrait done by me.
