I once took a class in oil painting. One of the exercises was to paint a basket of flowers in one session. The painting to the right was the result. It was completed in about thirty minutes. I learned a valuable lesson. Most of the other students were still painting their flowers long after I finished. They were doing each flower in their arrangement carefully, concerned with every detail. I had done some painting and studying of flowers prior to the class and my approach was to "think flower" and paint a large number as quickly as possible.

In our Annisquam back yard during the spring, we have some beautiful purple Iris. I did the above left watercolor painting of a small group of the flowers as an exercise in watercolor technique when I first started to study painting.

Ria once gave us a gift of a small, metal flower holder. We put a Rhododendrum in it, and I did this quick watercolor (above right) about the same time that I did the Iris painting.
