The first formal art course that I took was for drawing and sketching. It was about 18 years ago. This skill is basic to all types of painting. Our instructor demonstrated various techniques in class, then gave us homework to develop our skills further. One of the first tasks was to find an interesting tree to draw. I chose the remains of a dead oak on Bolton Road in Harvard. It was in the corner of a pasture. The result is above.

Later, we were asked to take an old shoe or boot and do a drawing of it. I chose my old, L.L. Bean boot, put it on the back lit coffee table in the living room of our Harvard home and did the drawing on the right.
